John Joseph reading at St. Marks Books

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

jj

John Joseph will be reading from his book The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon tonight at Solas in the East Village as part of St. Marks Books Reading Series at Solas.

An evening with John Joseph! (of Cro-Mags fame, author of Evolution of a Cro-Magnon and Meat is for Pussies). The St. Mark’s Bookshop Reading Series at Solas (that’s our favorite bar around the corner) features the same eclectic mix you’ll find in the bookshop’s stacks. You’ll see some of the best poetry, fiction and contemporary thought the East Village has to offer, two Thursdays a month. All readings begin at 7:30 PM, sharp.

Jeff’s Archive 01

Hardcore legend and friend of Radio Silence, Jeff Nelson has an amazing collection of “stuff.” Jeff’s house in Ohio is filled with a lifetime’s worth of things from candy wrapper collections to military heraldry. Somewhere in between his collections of “Vintage Gum Wrappers” and “Iguana’s, plastic” is Jeff’s “Hardcore” archive. Now, after many years, Jeff is getting rid of some of his collection. Above is a Minor Threat test pressing, that as of this writing, is going to sell for somewhere around $2000.00 (sorry for not posting this sooner collector dudes). Oh well, you missed it. No biggie though, Jeff has a lot more where this came from. Keep an eye on his auctions in the future.

The subject matter in Radio Silence might only reach into the early 1990s but the spirit of the book is celebrating hardcore. There’s no gravestone that says RIP Hardcore 1978-1986 or 1994 it’s something that continues to grow and blow our minds. We’ve been blessed to have some of the greatest bands, past and present, be a part of this process. Most recently in Toronto we had our most varied show stacked with bands of different styles and genres spanning hardcore’s history.

One band in recent years that stood out to me visually and sonically has been Lion of Judah. Their unique sound and visual presentation embodies what we wanted to capture in the pages of Radio Silence, a celebration of tradition told in a modern voice. Their sound has nods to the signature notey riffs that many Revolution Summer DC bands employed as well as the crunchy attack of classic NYHC mixed their personality and some interesting tempo changes.

We’re proud to team up with Lion of Judah and Youngblood Records to offer you a streaming version of their upcoming 7″ Number-rology which will be released September 15th.

Please visit the following links for info and support them on their current US tour. Some of their members have another incredible band called Give that you need to check out immediately, especially if you’re a fan of Swiz.

I know Terry Richardson is punk or whatever but this pic of him in the 1990s “floating ray” T-shirt pic taken from the aNYthing Glob…speechless….uncomfortable…funny.

Equally as perplexing as this.

Kim Jones

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Andy Capper over at Vice UK has some words about his old friend Kim Jones and his collection of vintage hardcore shirts. Sneaker Necks might recognize Kim as the creative director behind Umbro’s Y-3 line, and stylist-in-demand to celebs like Kanye and stuff. One of the first printed features about Radio Silence was the mens version of V magazine, VMan and conincidently included a story that Kim had styled with his personal collection of hardcore shirts.
